Plan UK's facial recognition billboard being tested on Oxford Street, West End
London's West End is famous for its theatre productions, affluent living and Chelsea Football Club. The latest addition to the posh area is a face recognition billboard, developed by Plan UK for 30,000 quid. The interactive billboard scans passerby, then it will determine whether they're male or female. Females will be shown the full 40 second advertisement, which shows the "Becasue I'm a Girl" campaign, focusing on the struggles girls have to endure in developing nations. Whereas a male will only be shown the Plan UK's website, and will have to visit the page in order to be informed on the campaign. This interactive billboard is to illustrate to men how it feels to be deprived of freedom of choice. The face recognition billboard has been tested at being 90% accurate, and it sure will set a trend in the outdoor advertising market.
Scan your desired product to be delivered to your door
After work, gym, football practice and a date, who has time to go grocery shopping these days? That's why Woolworths has brought out a virtual supermarket, which features pictures of products on the walls of Town Hall railway station, in Sydney's CBD. It is the first virtual supermarket in Australia, and commuters can scan the barcode of each product, the goods will then be delivered to your door. This means, you don't actually have to carry anything physically, and you also have the time to do your other things in your free time. So, what's the difference between grocery shopping online and a virtual supermarket? The only difference is that a virtual supermarket reminds you to buy any of the featured products (120 most popular items at Woolworths) while you're walking through one of Sydney's busiest city rail stations. Shoppers will need to download the Woolworths app on their iPhones, and the transaction goes through the app. It is truely the breakthrough of the grocery industry.
Facebook asks permission to access your address book to provide better services
Lets face it, if you own a smartphone, whether it be IOS, Blackberry or Android, you download apps to make your life a little easier. However, people still value their privacy and your friends or colleagues' privacy, but why are you still using these apps if they're utilising these privileged information to better provide service for you? Developers promise they do not store any information. The Facebook app for instance, lets be honest, everyone who has a Facebook account and a smartphone would have this app. What the Facebook app does, though, helps you find new friends, and it does ask you for permission before proceeding with the address book scan. Other apps which also accesses your address book (mainly Social apps) include: Tumblr, Skype, Four Square, Twitter, Instagram and Path.
Combining the physical with the digital is slowly becoming the norm, as users are expecting more from the geniuses who developed these apps. Angry Birds for example, is a multi-platform strategy puzzle game that have cemented itself in the apps industry as one of the most downloaded games. In mobile, it is available to IOS, Android, Symbian and others, while it is also availbe to the Playstation Network. As the tablet market is growing at a rapid rate, the Blackberry Playbook and the iPad have also adopted the Angry Birds craze. Especially on the iPad, as Mattel Toys have brought out Angry Birds themed toys to interact with the digital game. The game itself doesn't change, however, the user experience has definitely changed, as the interaction between the physical toy and the game itself unleashes new features. The plastic conductive material at the bottom of each Apptivity toy allows the toy to interact with the iPad and their respective apps. Check out the video to see for yourself.
From L-R: Stephen Merchant, Warwick Davis and Ricky Gervais
Today I get to finally talk about my favourite new TV series, Life's Too Short, brought to you by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. The creators of The Office, Extras, An Idiot Abroad and Cemetary Junction have teamed up once again. You can call it the love child of The Office and Extras, as it is in the style of a mockumentary, and the plot focuses on Warwick Davis, a real life dwarf in show business in the UK. The format alone is a winning formula, where the protagonist is filmed wherever he goes, and each episode features a celebrity in a cameo role. Davis was once a "successful" actor, appearing in films such as Star Wars, Harry Potter and Willow (I've never heard of it either), and now finding it difficult to be cast in any projects. On top of this, his wife (not a drawf) is filing for divorce as well, and his incompetent accountant is losing his money left, right and centre. It doesn't sound funny on paper, but fuel it with social faux pas, awkward situations and a couple of comedic geniuses (Gervais & Merchant), you have the ingredients for great comedy.
Happy Valentine's Day everyone. Hope the boys sent their flowers and chocolates in time for the girls to receive them at work/uni/school. Not everyone is into Valentine's Day, not just for single people, but also some coupled up lovers too. For example, my friend Nick spent Valentine's night with his girlfriend, only to unromantically dismissing her after their "special V-day sex" night, by saying: "Happy freakin' Valo's", and went straight to sleep. No gifts, cards, dinner...NOTHING! Surprisingly, they're still together. Although St. Valentine's Day celebrates romance, but it also celebrates friendship. So don't neglect your single friends, send them some love.
Let's be honest, us Asians are not well known in the world of sport. Unless you're Michael Chang , Yao Ming, Hidetoshi Nakata or a female golfer. That's in the western world. Or...you're part of the Chinese Olympics team for gymnastics or table tennis, but you're only known in China and maybe Taiwan. So I've decided to jump on the band wagon, and write a little something about the new NBA sensation, Jeremy Lin. I can claim this, as we share the same surname. What Jeremy is doing in the NBA is something all Asian communities worldwide can be proud of. Not only his playing position and style is completely different to that of Ming (8 time NBA All Star centre), but his upbringing is totally different to that of the 7ft6in ex-Houston man as well. This demonstrates our ability to adapt to the game, and not just a one show pony. Jeremy is the first man out of an Ivy League school (Harvard) to make it in the NBA since some bloke in the 60's, so its kind of a big deal for them too. He started at Golden State Warriors, however, couldn't make his mark at the west coast team, so he decided to join the Knicks this year. Since then, he has made some major headlines, particulary this week, as he averaged more than 25 points per game, and a special mention to his career high of 38 points against the mighty Lakers. Check out his jam on John Wall below.
The Karni Mata temple in the city of Deshnok, Rajasthan is perhaps one of the most unique places to visit in India, or the world. As you step into the temple, swarms of rats run riot in this holy place, and it isn't breaking any sanatory rules either, they are worshipped. Karni Mata was a Hindu sage, who was reincarnated in the form of what appears to be a rat. The people of the Karni Mata temple feed them daily, and provide them with milk. Foreign tourists like myself, are shit scared, as you have to be barefoot in order to step into the temple. Tens of thousdands of rats are believed to be living under the roof of Karni Mata, and it is also believed to house between 4-5 white rats. The white rats are rumoured to be straight reincarnations of Karni Mata herself, and her 3-4 sons. Visitors seeing these rare creatures are considered to be especially holy. Unfortunately, I only saw the normal ones, and was tiptoeing through the entire tour. More bizarre places to follow.
